Sound Deadener the Right Way for Less $$

**Page in the works, pictures detailing the project to follow**

I have tried nearly every sound deadener option I could think of over the years and have learned through trial and error and much research which options work best for the money.  Some of the things I have tried in the past are:

  • Dynamat
  • Yoga mats
  • Rubberized Undercoating
  • Truck Bed Liner
  • Jute padding
  • Roofing tar
  • Peal and seal
  • Stick on flat asphalt roofing
  • Caulking
  • Stick on foam heat shield

I would not use any asphalt based solutions ever again. My favorites after years of experimenting are shown below.  I am sharing this because it is what I use on my projects after failing in every imaginable way.  I purchased them on Amazon, so I am providing the links to the ones I use.  If you follow the links to purchase, I will get a small percentage of the proceeds which will help fund more instructional write ups and videos.

It is important to have a bonded mass layer to dampen vibrations.  If you don't stop the vibrating metal from moving you will never kill all the sound.  Think of what happens when you place your hand on a ringing bell or crash cymbal.  This is the same affect, it instantly dampens most of the vibration and sound. I tap each bare panel by hand and put the deadener on any smooth part of a panel that "rings" when I tap it.  You don't have to cover every surface, just the parts that are loud.  The Butyl Sound Deadener, Razor Blade and Roller I used are shown below and can be purchased through Amazon by following these links.

The next layer is adhesive backed closed cell foam to insulate and to decouple the vibrations that are still in the metal from the layer that will come after this.

After the foam is the Mass Loaded Vinyl.  This layer will stop a lot of sound and is the reason why new luxury cars are so quiet inside.  There is no adhesive backing so you have to just set it over the foam for the floors, and hang it using the ribbed push pins shown below.

After all this is complete, I then put the factory replacement carpet with Jute padding over the top of the mass loaded vinyl.  You will be amazed at how quiet your ride is, and how much less heat comes through the floor after doing this.
